The elbow is a complex structure composed of the humerus, ulna and radius. To favor the absorption of the force that passes through it, it also has cartilage that facilitates the movements of the elbow in terms of flexion and extension.
However, over time, the cartilage surface between the ulna and radius (forearm) and the humerus (upper arm) can wear away. The result is osteoarthritis of the elbow, which causes the patient severe pain. Wearing compression elbow sleeves is recommended for treatment. We explain why.

Types of elbow braces you should know about
What is elbow arthritis and what are the symptoms?
In general, arthritis is a disease that refers to the inflammation of one or more joints and therefore causes pain and stiffness in the affected area. For example, one of the most common forms is arthritis or osteoarthritis of the elbow, which is due to a degenerative disease of the elbow joint caused by the loss of cartilage covering the joint surfaces.
In this sense, it is an injury that manifests as a deterioration of the cartilage surface between the bones of the ulna, radius and humerus. This leads to the breakdown of the hard, slippery tissue that protects the ends of the bones where the joint is formed. As a result, in addition to the loss of articular cartilage, there is also hardening of the bone surfaces with bone growth at the periphery of the joint (known as osteophyte formation).
Among the main causes of this pathology of the elbow are:
- Loss of cartilage over the years (due to age).
- Previous trauma to the joint.
- Direct impacts that injure the area and cause progressive deterioration.
- Very excessive and repetitive exercises.
- Rheumatologic diseases.
- Genetic heredity.
For the diagnosis of elbow osteoarthritis, one of the most important aspects, in addition to laboratory and imaging studies (e.g., radiographs), is the clinical picture of the patient.
It is useful to know the most common signs and symptoms of elbow arthritis:
- Pain and stiffness in the elbow. This worsens after a period of inactivity.
- Inflammation or swelling in the area.
- Tingling due to pressure on the ulnar nerve.
- Locking of the joint
- Difficulty fully flexing or extending the elbow
- Limited range of motion
- Pinching or rubbing sensation in the elbow.
Advantages and benefits of elbow braces for arthritis
In most cases, people with elbow arthritis undergo elbow arthroscopy to restore mobility to the affected joint after an injury. This involves "arthroscopic debridement", in which a camera is placed in the area of the joint with small incisions and a suction instrument is inserted through additional bisections to remove loose cartilage and/or bone.
As part of conservative treatment, in addition to prescribing analgesic and anti-inflammatory medications, the specialist recommends the benefits of compression therapy to treat elbow osteoarthritis. Medically, it is a treatment that uses an elastic device or element to apply a controlled force or pressure to a specific area to improve circulation and thus relieve pain and/or inflammation.
To relieve the main symptoms of elbow osteoarthritis, it is recommended that an elbow compression sleeve be applied to the injured upper extremity to restore mobility more quickly.
An elbow support has the following benefits:
- Relieves pain in the elbow caused by osteoarthritis.
- Reduces inflammation or swelling that occurs.
- Promotes joint mobility as soon as possible after an injury.
- Minimize stress on tendons, ligaments and muscles in the elbow and wrist area.
- Improves blood circulation in the elbow and forearm area.
- Promote autonomy of the elbow after impact.
- Preventing the occurrence of other, more seriousPathologies that endanger the joint.
- Ensuring safety for the performance of activities after healing of the pathology.
- To provide the greatest possible comfort for the user.
